May 20, 2009 I am working on a submission for the Hangman Gallery. The theme is doubles or eleven since it is the 11th anniversary of the gallery. I have been working on a piece that incorporates multiple layers of doubles and elevens. The work is a double painting - a diptych. The paintings are (close to) mirror images of each other, using the pink lines and orange highlights to not only reinforce the mirror image but also represent another double and eleven. The multiple 11s are represented in the blue and yellow bands as well as in the pink lines.
To me, the idea of doubles is also an idea of opposites – I used the complementary colours of blue and orange as well as yellow and purple. I have not yet signed the piece – still working on a few touches to brighten up the key blue and yellow bars. I am planning to sign the right side painting properly and the left in mirror image.
Submission date is May 31 and, if chosen, the paintings will be shown in the Hangman Gallery from June 2 – 21, including at the media launch of the Riverdale Art Walk .
