It’s funny how you can visualize a painting one way and it takes on a life of its own. I call this painting English Lavender. The initial intent was to create a painting similar to Endless Poppies using a different colour combination than I had used before. I love lavender so decided to do different shades of purple. For good measure, I added real lavender from the garden so that the painting actually smells like an English Garden. As I painted, it needed additional colour and I added the yellow. The white bars were originally intended to be filled with a darker purple but it felt finished from a colour point of view.
When it was finished, I felt it was uninspired – too predictable. Turning it counter clockwise, all of a sudden, to me, it worked. Now, I really like the energy of the white - almost like an abstracted reflection on the water. Not sure it is really English Lavender anymore but I really like it.Open to comments.
